Sealing the Floors & Hunting

It's taken several weeks to complete applying polyurethane to the pine floors. We first had to purchase an orbital sander and a shop vac to prepare the wood. We used 80 medium grit sandpaper over the entire floor and then vacuumed it clean. The next step was to use 220 fine grit sandpaper to get it completely smooth before we applied the poly. We then cleaned it and wiped it down with damp rags. Both of our backs were not having it after that, so we took a break before heading up to apply the polyurethane.

During the break, Bob headed down the trail from the cabin to set up a hunting area. He and Katelyn went out a few times with their bows but didn't have any luck seeing anything. He's had a camera set up in the area and was able to catch three does passing by though! Check out the video through the 'video' link at the top of the page!

We knew it was going to take several coats of poly to get the floor evenly covered. The pine wood almost completely sucked up the first coat! It almost looked like we didn't even do anything. By the third coat it looked much more like we'd hoped. Not perfect, but it will do for what we need, which was mainly to protect the floors. The loft still needs one more coat before it's done. I didn't have the orbital sander when I did the loft, only a hand sander which didn't do as good of a job. So it doesn't look as smooth and nice as the rest of the floors. Oh well! FYI, we used Minwax Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors in Gloss and applied it with a lambswool applicator.
