Heights Are Not My Friend! Plus, Finishing the Gables

The saying goes "You learn something new every day." Well, I hate heights! Who knew! The last few days we've been building up the gables....and by "we" I mean Bob. Because I've tried and I'm not going any where near that height again! My job is pretty much handing things to Bob when he needs them and to make sure I'm around to call 911 in case he falls. Oh, and also not to make any sudden noises that scare him while he's all the way up there (which has happened a few times, whoops!).

Yesterday, we transported up the 25' long ridge beam as well as 3 other shorter ridge beams and more rafter beams. Then Bob built some staging so he could put a ladder on top to help with building the gables. It was a bit hairy, but he was able to finish building the logs almost to the top of the peak without falling to his demise.

Today, he cut a slot in the top two logs on both ends to be able to hold the ridge beam. He also installed some temporary wall fasteners and 2'x4' braces to give some extra support for when the ridge beam is erected into place. Next step is to put down the loft flooring to make it easier to install the roof and place 4'x4' posts in the loft to support the ridge beam.
